Autism Profiling Questionnaire (APQ)

A standardized tool for screening and follow-up of individuals with autism spectrum disorder.

What is the APQ

The APQ is a standardized grid for collecting data on the presence and degree of expression of some motor, cognitive, and behavioral difficulties typical of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), as perceived by caregivers or clinicians. It is not a diagnostic tool.

Objectives

To provide a standardized, time-comparable profile (pre/post treatment) of skills and behavioral symptoms, supporting therapeutic planning and multicenter scientific research.

Administration

The questionnaire is filled in by a caregiver or clinician, anonymously with respect to the public portal. Each item is rated on a 4-point Likert scale: 1 = Not at all, 2 = A little, 3 = Quite a lot, 4 = Very much.

Questionnaire clusters

Cognitive skills (9 items): language, attention, memory, executive functions, autonomy, sphincteric control, rest, sensory issues.
Motor skills (2 items): gross and fine motor skills.
Behavioral skills (5 items): non-verbal communication, eye contact, adaptation, social rules, socialization.
Behavioral symptoms (5 items): self-aggression, hetero-aggression, agitation, irritability, stereotypies.

Interpretation

For each cluster, sum, mean, and normalized percentage (1-4 scale) are calculated. The pre/post comparison highlights changes over time, contextualized by age, sex, and administering center.

Warnings

Scores reflect the subjective perception of the person filling in the form and do not replace a specialist clinical evaluation.

Test limitations

The tool is not validated as a diagnostic test, has no built-in control group, and relies on caregiver/clinician self-observation.

Scientific use

The APQ has been used in retrospective studies published in peer-reviewed journals on the effects of non-invasive neuromodulation treatments on deficits typical of ASD.

Privacy and GDPR

Data processing complies with EU Regulation 2016/679 (GDPR): pseudonymization, minimization, right to erasure, and consent registry.
